PeaceWorks for Safe Schools:
Preventing and Responding to Bullying
PK through Senior High
Training Institute for Classroom, Guidance, or After School

Implementing a comprehensive Safe Schools program requires deliberate attention to bullying. PeaceWorks can help you bring a unified approach for your school or district. This two-day overview introduces the basics for implementing conflict resolution and peer mediation, with attention given specifically to how all skills can help prevent bullying, or respond constructively. This training is geared toward participants who are new to teaching peacemaking skills and mediation, or who would like a general review.

In addition to our offering a grade-specific Teacher's Guide for every grade from PK through 8, a unique Senior High component, and special materials for in-school suspension and after school programs, our literature-based curricula for grades K, 3, and 4, and our 8th grade American History curriculum make it easier than ever to integrate conflict resolution with academic requirements.

Thursday: Preventing Bullying through Conflict Resolution, Grades PK-12
1. Examine six components of conflict resolution to build the peaceful classroom environment, to help prevent both routine conflicts and bullying, and provide a context for responding.
2. Survey grade-specific PeaceWorks lessons.
3. Understand the outcomes and benefits of a conflict resolution program.
4. Learn to help students apply curriculum lessons to their own conflicts and any situation involving bullies.
5. Introduce basic implementation issues for various settings.

The Thursday session may also include a Youth Panel sponsored by Safe Schools South Florida, relating our concepts specifically to LGBTQ issues at all ages.

Friday: Peer Mediation, Grades 4-12 (we co-present concepts and skills in the Peace Table format for grades PK-3)
1. Understand the relationship of mediation to a well-established
conflict resolution and safe schools program, including variables that affect whether mediation is appropriate for certain bullying situations.
2. Learn and practice essential mediation skills.
3. Learn the process for training peer mediators.
4. Introduce basic implementation issues.
